Why You Should Go for Marriage Counseling
Today, the divorce rate is high with many families breaking down. There can be many reasons why marriages end in divorce including a breakdown in communication or selfishness in a relationship that was meant to be a partnership. These problems would soon make the couple drift apart from each other such that the best solution that they could think of is to get a divorce. If you somehow feel that this is slowly happening to your marriage and you want to do something about it, then you should go for marriage counseling.
Agreeing that marriage counseling is a solution to their marriage problem is one way to ensure its success. If one party is unwilling to go for counseling then even if he/she is forced to do it, it will be more difficult to succeed because success depends on the efforts of both parties. It takes cooperation and working together to make marriage counseling work. With both parties, it would be easier to come up with solutions to marital problems since each one of his/her part will be willing to contribute to solving the problem. When there is unfaithfulness in the marriage, then this also may be a factor for marriage counseling to fail. An unfaithful spouse no longer desire his/her partner and so he/she will be more than willing to bread the marriage.
Married couple sometimes find it hard to communicate with each other because there will be negative and hurtful responses from the other when they try to express their own feelings but in a marriage counseling session, they are able to do it without any fear because the counselor will mediate and control the conversations so that it will be profitable instead of being a fight. When the couple has vented out their thoughts and feelings, the counselor will evaluate everything that has been said, and inform them where their mistakes actually lie. Many times it is just all about who is right, but this is not the real issue. When there is a problem, both couples should work together to solve their problem. A counselor would help them realize their mistakes and help them to learn many lessons and correct behavioral issues.
In marriage counseling, the counselor would try to forge forgiveness in each other’s heart. The start of healing will come when wrong words and wrong actions are forgiven. If there is a realization on both parties of the wrongs that they have done to the other and asks for forgiveness and a chance to make up for them, then this is a good sign and the start of healing for a broken relationship.
If you and your spouse are willing to give your marriage another chance, then seek a good marriage counselor and see your relationship restored back to what it was before.
